The Blue House in Coles Bay – as soon as I saw it, I knew we were going to love it.
Our daughter wasn’t interested in the Hazards rising out from the pink granite rocks behind it, she just wanted to leap about in pirouettes on the deck, or play games with her sister in their gigantic room on the lower level of the house – their own private level.
This vacation rental had it all for families – beautiful views over the Swan River, top-notch amenities, and a home away from home feel.
If you’re thinking about staying at The Blue House in Coles Bay, here’s our honest review from our stay.

About The Blue House, Coles Bay
The Blue House is situated on Tasmania’s east coast at 58 Swanwick Drive, Coles Bay, a short drive from Freycinet National Park.
It’s a 2-hour drive or 187 km (116 miles) from Hobart and 169 km (105 miles) from Launceston. The nearest airport is in Launceston, which is 154 km (96 miles) from The Blue House.
It has three bedrooms that can sleep six people. You will find one king bed, one queen bed, and 2 single beds.
When staying at The Blue House, you have the entire home to yourselves. It’s entirely self-catering and kitted out with everything you need, from a fully-equipped kitchen to barbecue facilities, to free private parking and free wifi.
It also has lots of space for the family to spread out. There’s a large living area, and on a warm summer’s day, there’s also a balcony and outside terrace with river views to sit on.
The decor is modern and has a certain elegance to it, but without looking pretentious. It just looks cosy and inviting.
The whole home is spacious and comfortable. Read on to see what we loved about it!
Things We Like About The Blue House
The location
The Blue House is located where the Swan River meets Great Oyster Bay, only a 5 minute drive from Coles Bay and world famous Freycinet National Park and Wineglass Bay.
It’s serene and quiet and stunning and the perfect place for a family to stay at what is my favourite area of Australia, Freycinet.
Freycinet National Park is stunning, and being on it’s doorstep was convenient as we wanted to spend a few days exploring the park.
The Blue House is also only a 7-minute walk from Sandpiper Beach.
The outdoor deck
We loved spending the mornings enjoying the walking trails around the national park, having champagne picnics at the lighthouse for sunrise, rock scrambling at Honeymoon Bay, and hiking down to Wineglass Bay.
But then we also looked forward to returning to The Blue House in the afternoons to spend time out on the deck having a BBQ and admiring the views with a glass of wine in hand and a good book.
Also a short stroll from the house are some of the most beautiful beaches in Coles Bay.
Offered a motivational space to work
It was also the perfect place for inspired thought for our blog thanks to the amount of living space – everyone in the family could spread out, and me and Craig could work while the kids played.
Not only this, but the beauty of Coles Bay blows your mind at every turn – The Blue House is the perfect accompaniment to it.
Whether you want to relax and soak in the serenity, or catch up on your memoirs, or just watch the sunset from the comfort of your holiday house, The Blue House seems to ooze inspiration.
Entertainment provided
The owners provide kayaks for hire at an extra cost, and there are fishing rods for guests to use. There’s also plenty of games, balls and badminton sets to play with.
There are shelves of DVD’s and piles of magazines to read – I relished in the opportunity to put my feet up on the comfy couch and digest a few (yes, something I rarely do so is a huge treat!).
The kitchen
The kitchen is very modern and I got extremely excited that for the first time on our trip, we finally stayed somewhere that had huge bowls we could use for our Nepalese curry dinner.
Which, strangely tasted the best I had ever made. A bit of Blue House love sprinkled in there perhaps?
Comfy beds
The beds were comfy and I loved waking early to see the fog dancing on top of the river through my bedroom window.
We were staying in the summer, but in the winter it can get cold and they have heated blankets, which we didn’t need to use.
It was quiet at night and we rarely heard a sound. When you travel full time, having nights like this is a pure luxury!
Things We Didn’t Like About The Blue House
There’s only one bathroom though, with a walk-in shower. We were staying with our parents, so there were four adults and two children staying in the house.
It was fine for a couple of nights, but having one extra bathroom would have been appreciated so we didn’t have to queue to shower in the mornings.
Other than that, there was nothing else we didn’t like!
The Verdict: Would We Recommend The Blue House?
The minute we unpacked our bags, we were rueful that we would be packing them again in 2 days time. We could have stayed in The Blue House for at least a week.
The Blue House offered us everything we could need and want for a luxury accommodation in Coles Bay, and I think we’ll be back if we’re ever looking for great family accommodation in Coles Bay near Freycinet National Park again.
We would definitely recommend this vacation rental to anyone looking to stay close to Freycinet National Park.
