We felt pretty excited to be one of the first people to stay in the new Tune Hotel Melbourne.
It was only two weeks old and is a new concept in Australia. Tune Hotels have been taking Asia by storm and we can see it doing pretty well in Australia too.
We love finding and sharing great travel deals and we think this one is a pretty solid concept.
Tune Hotels has pioneered a “pay-as-you-use” concept. Guests only pay for room rates with the option of adding on other amenities like towels and toiletries, in-room Wi-Fi and satellite TV.
It follows a similar concept to that of the budget airline, Air Asia (they have the same founder).
It’s about paying for what you want and actually use, to help keep costs down. You can tailor your hotel experience according to your needs – pay for the room – then have the choice of adding any desired upgrades.
Their main focus is on providing high-quality basics: comfortable beds and powerful hot showers – and it was a great shower!
As soon as we arrived, it was quickly apparent the Tune Hotel in Melbourne was modern and FUNKY.
We loved the vibrant decor of the lobby and the indoor courtyard, and the friendliness of the staff.
It’s like we’ve said plenty of times before, budget doesn’t mean you have to cut back on smiles.
We had an interconnecting family room with two en-suite bathrooms. One room had a queen bed and the other a queen and a single – super helpful if you have three kids as it’s hard to find a hotel room that sleeps a family of five!
Whilst our main room was small, it was clean and practical. The small part was fine with us because we spent the majority of our time exploring Melbourne, which is where the value of staying in a place like Tune lies.
We don’t stay in hotels and hang in our room, and you shouldn’t either. But having a comfortable place to come home to is nice. We were very comfortable at Tune.
We appreciated the work desks in each room, and the beds are elevated allowing for all your suitcases to be stored in the void underneath.
The hotel also features a restaurant, café, self-service launderette, computer kiosks, undercover parking and luggage storage facilities (both at extra cost).
Benefits of Tune Hotel Melbourne
Location, location, location…
What is it you want from a major city hotel? For us it’s to be centrally located in a safe neighbourhood – we like to walk!
The location of the Tune Hotel is in Carlton, North Melbourne, and it’s awesome. It’s situated on Swanston Street, the main thoroughfare of Melbourne.
You can walk to all these locations in 5-10 minutes:
- City Centre
- Lygon Street Carlton (‘Little Italy’)
- Queen Victoria Market
- Carlton Gardens
- University of Melbourne
- + easy walk to numerous other cafes, pubs, and convenience stores.
Don’t like to walk? The tram stops right outside the front door and connects with all major tram lines throughout Melbourne.
You are also within easy reach of top suburbs like Fitzroy, Collingwood and Richmond.
One thing that worried me, particularly as a family of four, was not having access to a kitchen. This of course bumps up the cost of eating out.
But, when you put the numbers together, the cost of renting an apartment in Melbourne, in that location would probably be more than the Tune Hotel room (from $130 family room) + your eating out costs.
So this way, by spending less on accommodation, you gain more in experiences, because I love eating out, especially in a city like Melbourne. And being so close to Chinatown and Queen Victoria Market helps with cheap eats!
So if you’re looking for great comfort just minutes from Melbourne’s city centre without paying the usual exorbitant rates, consider Tune.
Tune Hotel Melbourne is located at 609 Swanston St, Carlton. Room types and costs include:
- 175 double rooms (1 double bed) – from $75
