I knew Savannah would end up changing her mind, but in her fiercely independent way, she wouldn’t change into her swimming costumes no matter how many times Kalyra and I told her just in case she wants to.
Having a slight fear of the water she decided she would just hang out with Nan and Pop and watch.
Kalyra and I jumped straight on the stand up paddle boards and paddled out. When it’s a hot day with a large body of water absent of sharks in front of us, we have no fear. I felt my body relax and breathe deeper with each paddle.
Bliss. That’s what I experience on the board rhythmically paddling to the beat of the breeze and the ocean ripples.
Lake Lure is one of my favorite places in the US, if not the world. I feel so alive and connected. It’s surrounded by green pine forest and so serene. I paddled and dreamt of one day owning a summer home on its shores so I could depart from the world for a few months each year to just be with nature and live a simple life.
The water wasn’t as cold as we thought so we had a bit of a refreshing swim as well. Reluctantly, I paddled in to switch with Craig determined to go back out again at sunrise the next morning.
That’s when Savannah decided she wanted to go for a swim.
We walked back up the graveled path to our room together to get changed.
What the?” I felt something sharp in my foot. I thought I had stepped on some kind of extra large but, or bindi as we call them back home. I looked down and at the end of my foot was a bee, and then it disappeared, and the pain intensified.
Really intensified. It’s the next morning and my foot still throbs.
I always wondered what it would be like to get stung by a bee. Now I wished I never wondered that as it’s quite ferocious.
My first thought, “What if I am allergic?” Because you don’t know until you get stunk right?
“Quick Savannah let’s go to the office. Mummy’s been stung by a bee.”
She was the perfect support holding my hand and taking me to the office and standing beside me as they gave me a few ointments. the stinger wasn’t present which was a good thing. My foot swelled, burned and turned red.
Savannah ran downstairs to let the others know I had been stung by a bee and Mum came up to help as well.
“Now if you feel aby shortness of breath, pulse racing, or throat swelling you must phone 911 immediately,” the office lady told me. “But, if you were allergic you probably would have had a reaction by now.”
I hobbled back downstairs.
Not that much longer my throat suddenly went all dry. Sometimes, if I’ve eaten something I shouldn’t have, mostly gluten (I have a few food sensitivities) I’ll wake up in the middle of the night with this intense dry throat. It’s scary as I wake up gasping for breath and no amount of water I drink can take the dryness away. I can happen multiple times in the night.
This was exactly that same thing.
I started coughing and spluttering, gasping for breath, trying to find water to help.
“Are you okay? Mum jumped up and ran to exchange the dirty old coffee for water from the faucet as that’s all we had near us.
I gulped it down but still the dryness was there and I could feel that gasping for breath starting. And my pulse was certainly racing.
I almost yelled out call 911.
Was the nausea now appearing because of the bee or the stale coffee tasting water I just guzzled.
I didn’t want to panic. I went back and forth between, “Don’t overact and don’t misjudge this or it could spell The End.”
Savannah, who has such a direct and open personality, says,
“Oh no Mum. Are you going to die. You can’t. We haven’t even been to New York yet.”
She sure does love that city and we were due to arrive in just a few days.
Now I had to cope with spurts of giggles amongst the gasping.
The dryness abated and I calmed myself down.Google told me most severe reactions to a bee sting happen between 3 – 30 minutes after its sting. We were beyond the 30 minutes.
For the next few hours, the shortness of breath, and dry throat reactions would continue. Each time that throat went dry and itchy, I would gasp for breath.
We attempted to go to the pharmacy for antihistamines but it was closed. I didn’t have anything relevant in our First Aid Kit. Grab this list of what to pack in your travel first aid kit.
They had a machine where I could check my heart rate and blood pressure and all seemed fine. I decided I’d be okay, I had experienced a mild reaction. I confidently stated, that if I was going to die, I would have already. So we could grab our picnic dinner and head to the symphony under Chimney Rock in town.
It was spectacular We had the most beautiful picnic views with the chimney rock and a high plunging waterfall above. The symphony music was calming and inspiring. The ended with a stirring rendition of Amazing Grace, with bagpipes, and Oh Danny Boy.
My poor Darling Savannah gave me a cuddle. “It’s all my fault Mummy. If I didn’t want to go swimming you would never have been walking up that path to get stung by a bee.”
She has the heart of an angel. I squeezed her.
“It’s not your fault at all. That could have happened anywhere at any time. It had nothing to do with you. Don’t you blame yourself. You were the perfect support angel of me. Thank you for being there.”
I was so glad we went and I did not have to call 911.
The pain continued in my foot, and still is sore now as I write this. I do not want to get stung by a bee again.
A few people commented on my Facebook update, bringing into my awareness what could happen for future bee stings. Because I experienced a mild reaction, it’s obvious my body doesn’t take to a bee sting.
The first time, my body is figuring out what the poison is and adapting. The second bee sting is when the allergic reaction could intensify. So when I get home I will be seeing the doctor to get tested. I didn’t even know you could get tested for bee allergy.
I won’t be taking a chance on this one. That reaction I had, even though it was mild, was sure scary.
So if you are reading this and have had something similar happen with you first bee sting, go and get tested as well so the second time you’ll be safe.
Let’s hope, that for you and me there is no second time as it hurts bad!!
