Happy 2013: Where are we headed?

Where are we headed

Who’s feeling the love for this year already?

It’s the new Mayan calendar right? Got you all fired up!

This is the first year in many we are so excited–not wishful-excitement and thank-goodness-anther-year-has-gone relief-but honest knowing that life is going to rock it.

Embrace the opportunity for change, growth, and peace.

Here’s where we are headed this year:

New website, New motto, New purpose

Our new motto:

Travel more. Create better memories.

Craig and I spent months discussing the purpose of our blog and what we wanted our motto to be.

Everyone talks about the niche, but how can you compartmentalize travel experiences that have spanned 15 years and included solo travel, budget travel, couples travel, family travel, working holiday, backpacking travel and short-breaks?

Travel is our lifestyle and it has evolved as we have.

We don’t want to tell people to travel in one certain way, as we know any way is good enough. We want to help people to travel more, no matter their style or preferences.

That is why we talk a lot about the culture of travel, highlight destinations, and offer travel tips for a wide variety of travellers.

We believe life is all about the memories.

It is the only thing that you can take with you as you move from one chapter of your life to the next and eventually to the final destination.

Travel is a way to create better memories. And that is what we want you to do .

Travel more and create better memories.

The new look website design should be here next week. YAY!

Website design is a lengthy process. We can’t wait for you to see it. We’ll be releasing a new video series sharing our best 9 tips for having more travel in your life.

Those who sign up to our newsletter will get access.

Survey Improvements

We recently asked readers to take a survey (thanks to those who did, if you didn’t, it’s not too late- click here)

We were pleased to hear the design of y travel blog is unliked – not because we’re glad it sucks, but because we are stoked we decided to improve the look and make it more functional.

We have taken on board so many recommendations, including creating products to help you travel more. We are focused this year on offering information on a range of different travel experiences and providing tips helping you to plan and save for travel. (Some cool tips coming up.)

I did discuss with Craig at length as to whether we should include porn photos? As one person suggested. But, luckily for you, we decided that whilst it might spice up our married life, it probably wouldn’t fit too well with the blog.

Maybe a new venture perhaps? So sorry to the person who requested that.

Own products

Our focus this year is definitely on creating our own products. Our readers are asking for it through the survey and we are intent on delivering.

We have already started work on an app, which we hope will be out in a few months and will kickstart a whole series. Stay tuned.

I’m also keen to finish up a couple of ebooks and guides to assist those with the planning of travel.

Podcast

We are keen to get the travel podcast consistently rocking. Ideally we would like one podcast a week, but let’s aim for 2 a month.

Craig was recently told by an “energy reader” that he is a humourist and has the ability to change the world with his inner clown! So, the clown has been invited to enter the recording studio.

Video

We love the medium of video to show the travel experience, we just aren’t that great at creating them.

We’ve decided we’ll never make the cutting edge creative style, so we’re just going to do raw in the moment shooting. You can see our very amateur style already over on our You Tube channel.

Travel

At the moment, we are trying to lay low on the travel scene! What? This is a travel blog! We know, lucky for you we have over 15 years experience so have plenty of knowledge to share to fill in the gaps.

It’s not that we don’t WANT to travel, we just have to pause it in order to achieve the above mentioned things.

And because Kalyra is starting school in February (how could this be??)

If an opportunity arises (and we are working on it with our agent) where we can travel for a long period, I have no hesitation homeschooling for a period of time. It’s not our long term plan, but one year wouldn’t hurt.

But, until that happens, I don’t want to be pulling her in and out of school. It’s either one or the other.

We’ll still be making use of school holidays, weekends and doing trips solo, if needed.

The first two months of the year should give us a good indication of our travel plans. We do have a 2 week family trip to Thailand locked in for January and are planning a short camping trip (maybe not so low on the travel scene after all!)

Thank you for your support in 2012!

  1. It’s great to hear about all your 2013 plans! Creating your own products sounds like it’s going to be an awesome (and tough) experience. We’re headed to SE Asia for a few months early 2013 and then back to Australia to touch base with family and friends. Trudy and I want to do more real “blogging on the go” with live updates.. Would love to branch into doing some videos too, but it’s certainly a new challenge!

Looking forward to seeing what you guys get up to in 2013 :)

    • It’s so challenging Tom. Trying to blog, video and travel at the same time can be so draining. You can only do what you can do! I hope you enjoy SE Asia!

  3. Editing video is the easy part — but it does take time — time you guys don’t have, by the sounds of your 2013 plans. With the right software you can easily splice footage and add music and titles.

I look forward to reading on the new website layout!

  5. What great plans ahead! It’s going to be an awesome year. My travel plans are not set in stone yet, but there will be the Pacific northwest again, hopefully Vancouver Island as well this time, and potentially Asia, so I look forward to your Thailand posts as I have never been there!

  6. Those are exciting plans for the new year! I’m very excited to see the new site.

I understand why you’d want to lay low for a while, Australia is so fantastic. Can’t wait to be there in a few days!

  7. Remain open to opportunity and travel can creep up behind you and take you for the ride –
Last year I planned on popping across to one country and ended up traversing seven!

It looks like we’re similarly aligned when it comes to the importance of memories –
Something I’m pretty passionate about too ;)

  9. HAHAHAHA ohmygod WHO said they wanted porn photos on the site? LOL! I’m sure there’s a whole separate area of the internet for erotic photos of married couples. Although y’know, a few more shirtless photos of Craig wouldn’t go amis…

Wait, did I really just type that?

Moving on….I’m excited to see where you guys will be heading this year, and I enjoyed following your adventures last year! The USA, Colombia, Canada, Eastern Europe and Africa are all on the agenda for me this year. Finally heading out on that RTW trip that I’ve always dreamed of. Woo hoo!

    Hi Caz and Craig,

I love the new layout.. although I also liked the old one too :)

I just wanted to tell you guys that you have been a constant inspiration to us (my hubby and I). While we were still in our old life planning our new one, your stories and tips truly helped us.

As fellow Aussies we felt a kindred spirit of sorts.

And now, we have been living our new nomadic life (sold everything to live on the road for a few years) for nearly 12 months, you are still a constant source of inspiration.

Thank you for sharing your stories with the world and inspiring people like us to take the plunge and to follow our dreams. (Weird as it is that we dreamed of being homeless!)

We hope you both have a wonderful 2013 and keep inspiring others as you do.

    Your fellow Aussie travelers,
    Nicole and Michael
